📋 Treaty of Waitangi references in legislation
← All policiesWhether statutory references to the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi/the Treaty of Waitangi should stay in legislation. The one vote tagged so far is the References to Tiriti o Waitangi/Treaty of Waitangi (Repeals) Amendment Bill, which repeals those references from six Acts: the Crown Pastoral Land Act 1998, Education and Training Act 2020, Energy Efficiency and Conservation Act 2000, Organic Products and Production Act 2023, Plant Variety Rights Act 2022, and Smokefree Environments and Regulated Products Act 1990 - an Aye on that bill counts "against" here, since it supports removing the references rather than keeping them.
It's one of three Treaty-related bills introduced together on 15 September 2026, as part of a government review of how legislation references the Treaty, passed under urgency. The other two (standardising Treaty wording across Acts, and reducing Treaty provisions to a single legal standard) aren't tagged here yet. Te Pāti Māori described the three-bill package as "the last act to attack Te Tiriti".
How each party has stood on this policy over time. On a 🔄 Aye = against vote, whoever voted Aye is shown as opposing the policy, not supporting it. 🙋 Conscience vote rows show which way most of that party's MPs voted, plus what % voted Aye in the House.
