Urgent Debates Declined — Public Service Commission Report—Complaints made to Fire and Emergency New Zealand

I received a letter from Chlöe Swarbrick seeking to debate, under Standing Order 399, the Public Service Commission report entitled Review of a Series of Complaints made to Fire and Emergency New Zealand. The release of a report does not in itself lead to an urgent debate—Speakers’ ruling 225/7. There must be some element of urgency to warrant setting aside the business of the House. An urgent debate is a way to hold the Government to account for its actions—Speakers’ ruling 218/2. No substantive Government action in response to the report has been indicated in the member’s letter. The application is declined.
