Social Security (Jobseeker Support and Accommodation Supplement) Amendment Bill
Thank you, Mr Chair. I would like to start with clause 2 on commencement. Now, I understand clause 2(2) coming into force 1 April, start of the financial year. That makes sense. I am curious as to the date for clause 1, because 2 November, however, is a very odd date to start a particular piece of legislation. So would the Minister for Social Development and Employment please elucidate on why the Act comes into force on 2 November 2026. Thatβs my first question to the Minister.
I also want to check in terms ofβthank you, Minister, by the way. That does make sense. I do want to check with the Minister for Social Development and Employment on the title of this particular bill on whether β(Jobseeker Support and Accommodation Supplement)β actually does reflect what this bill does, because I think, in some ways, itβs not simply the accommodation supplement. The changes that weβre seeing to the jobseeker is not simply to the jobseeker support itself, but in terms of the parental income requirement. So I just wanted to check with the Minister that in that particular title the parental income requirement, which is a substantial part of this bill, has not been added into the title of the bill, which would potentially lead to some confusion, because, for example, itβs not simply granting jobseeker support. We could say, β(Jobseeker Support Alteration and Accommodation Supplement)β or β(Jobseeker Support and Accommodation Supplement Alteration) Amendment Billβ. So I just want to seek the Ministerβs clarification that neither of those two things really reflect what weβre seeing here in this bill.
