Urgent Debates Declined — School Lunch Programme—Student Injury

Members, I’ve received a letter from Dr Lawrence Xu-Nan seeking to debate under Standing Order 399 the incident at a Gisborne school where a student was burnt by a lunch provided under the Government’s school lunches programme. Not every injury sustained at a school can be the subject of an urgent debate. The authentication provided by the member does not provide information about any further actions being taken by the Government except that a wider investigation into the incident is under way. An urgent debate is a way of debating actions by the Government. The absence of action or the existence of an ongoing situation do not warrant an urgent debate. The application is declined.
