Social Security (Subsequent Child Policy Removal) Amendment Bill

Members, we now come to the final debate—that is, the debate on clauses 1 and 2, title and commencement.

I’d like to just take a short call on the title of this bill, currently called the Social Security (Subsequent Child Policy Removal) Amendment Bill, and suggest that we call this bill the “Social Security (Long-term Dependency) Bill”, because I believe that this is what we are condemning a lot of our most vulnerable people in this country to: long-term dependency on the State. For a socialist Government, I anticipate that that is exactly what they are hoping to do. But for people that care about the long-term future of this country, the financial viability of this country, but mostly about the children that are being born into these homes, this side of the House believes that we need to be creating independence, financial security, and really solid homes where families go off to work, where children go off to school, and they train and they grow up to be contributing members of this country. I think the title does not suit the outcome that this bill is going to deliver. I rest my case.
