Urgent Debates Declined — KiwiBuild—Government Announcement on Reset
I’ve received a letter from the Hon Simon Bridges seeking a debate under Standing Order 389 on the Government’s announcement regarding the reset of KiwiBuild. This is a particular case of recent occurrence for which there is ministerial responsibility. The housing shortage is an important issue and the Government’s policies to address it are of significant interest to Parliament and the public. However, the business of the House should not be set aside just because a ministerial announcement has been made, even though it may be important. There must be such an element of urgency that the matter take precedence over other business—Speakers’ ruling 197/5. The Estimates debate is scheduled to be held immediately after oral questions. There will be an opportunity to debate the matter during the consideration of the social services and community sector. For those reasons, the application is declined.
