Urgency

I move, That urgency be accorded the introduction and first reading of the Countering Terrorist Fighters Legislation Bill and its referral to a select committee. Urgency is required because of the urgency of the proposals contained in the bill. Following a narrow and tightly focused review of New Zealand’s settings in relation to foreign terrorist fighters, the bill contains proposals that will strengthen the Government’s ability to deal with evolving threats. The legislation contains measures that can add to the safety and the security of New Zealand in the short term. It is the Government’s intention that this legislation be progressed before the House rises for Christmas so that we are in a stronger position to deal with the threats our agencies are seeing.
