Business Statement
When the House resumes on Tuesday, 11 December the Government will pass the Alcohol Reform Bill and hold the first readings of the Resource Management Reform Bill and the Prisonersβ and Victimsβ Claims (Continuation and Reform) Amendment Bill. With the agreement of the Business Committee, there will be an extended sitting on Tuesday, 11 December, effective on the morning of Wednesday, 12 December, to deal with two notices of motion and to progress a number of non-controversial bills. On Wednesday afternoon the House will debate the adjournment motion, after which the House will rise for the Christmas break.
I am just checking that the Government is giving an assurance that no other legislation will be introduced next week.
I think, in reply to that, that it has been made very clear at the Business Committee what business is being proposed.
Can I just seek a matter of clarity there. The Minister said that the Government will pass the Alcohol Reform Bill. Frankly, could we possibly get the procedures right here? The Deputy Leader of the House should have said that the Government will move the passage of the bill. To get up and tell the whole world that, regardless of this Parliament and these great constitutional freedoms and rights, the Government is going to pass the bill is simply wrong and will be misinforming all those young people who do think that democracy is important.
The member makes a reasonable point. We need to be careful of language, and not pre-empt the Parliament.
