Ministerial Statements — Army—Vehicle Accident
Yesterday afternoon two Burnham-based soldiers were killed in a vehicle accident on Banks Peninsula. A third soldier was seriously injured and is at present in a stable condition in Christchurch Hospital. The soldiers were on a driving training course when the accident happened. These two tragic deaths happened during an exercise to prepare our personnel for the often dangerous situations they face overseas. I can tell members that a court of inquiry is already under way, and, as is normal in such circumstances, there will also be a police inquiry. Obviously, therefore, it is inappropriate for me to comment any further on any details relating to the accident. At this time our thoughts are with the families of the two soldiers who died, and with the injured soldier, as well as with their colleagues. I know that all members would join me in expressing their deepest sympathy to the families and loved ones of those involved in this tragic accident.
