Motions — New Zealand Rugby Sevens

I move, That the House congratulate the Black Sox on winning the men’s world softball championship on 8 February 2004 and, in so doing, winning the world championship for the third successive time. This victory is especially sweet, given that it was achieved on home soil. I am sure the House will join me in congratulating the efforts of the coach Don Tricker, captain Jarrad Martin, and Mark Sorenson, who, I think, has been in the team, Mr Speaker, nearly as long as you have been here, and other members of the world champion Black Sox.

I further move, That the House acknowledge the victory of the New Zealand men’s rugby sevens team in the final of the Wellington tournament on 7 February. This victory illustrates the depth of rugby sevens talent in New Zealand and the mastery of coach Gordon Tietjens in building a successful side, with not a very big base.

These motions are, I think, an excellent idea. Both the Black Sox and the sevens team were a great credit to our country.

New Zealand First also endorses the motions. It was thrilling to see the Black Sox win their third world championship, especially after being three runs down in the first innings. It was a wonderful performance by the whole team, and we endorse the motions put by the Minister.

I would like to add the Green’s congratulations. I was busy at another sporting engagement halfway up the South Island. I was in a restaurant, and the game was on television. Everybody was watching, and I have to say it brought immense glee to the people at that gathering. I got home and everyone was talking about it. The joy that events like these add to the country is enormous. I say “Well done!” to the Black Sox and to the New Zealand rugby sevens team.
