Urgent Debates Declined — Overseas Investment Act—Review

I have received a letter from Rod Donald seeking to debate under Standing Order 376 the decision to review the Overseas Investment Act. This is a particular case of recent occurrence involving ministerial responsibility, but I do not consider, however, that the decision to initiate a review that will lead to legislative proposals by the middle of next year requires an urgent debate to be held on it today. The application is accordingly declined.

I seek leave to table two documents. One is the European Commission request to New Zealand that we remove Overseas Investment Commission control of rural land and remove the $10 million level of scrutiny. The second document is Robert Zoellick’s letter to the United States Senate.
